Mirassou Winery enjoys a long history with Pinot Noir
David Mirassou would likely be in a different line of work if his great-great-great-grandfather had struck it rich mining for gold in California. Instead relatives in his native France financed Mirassou’s ancestor Pierre Pellier’s ill-fated efforts.
The experience wasn’t a complete waste however. A nurseryman by trade, Pellier returned home convinced that California’s fertile soils presented another golden opportunity. He and his wife Henrietta sailed from France in 1854 with a collection of grape cuttings and other fruit trees in tow. Among the vines was a variety that was logged as Black Burgundy — the first introduction of Pinot Noir to the California landscape.
Pinot remains close to Mirassou’s heart and continues to be a focal point for his family’s winery. Not surprisingly it’s the wine the sixth generation winemaker plans to reach for when he celebrates this holiday season.
