The latest from Australia’s Cut Copy is welcome tonic for fans of 1980s New Wave. Zonoscope draws much inspiration from the likes of Depeche Mode, O.M.D. and New Order. But it works because the synth-pop duo finds fanciful new ways to arrange their pulsating dance music. The same reinvention is seen with the refreshing and complex Penfolds 2009 Thomas Hyland Chardonnay Adelaide, Australia $19.95 (611228).
On his fifth Iron & Wine release, American singer- songwriter Sam Beam continues his evolution from folksy to funky. Kiss Each Other Clean sports a lively almost pop production that reveals unexpected layers in Beam’s delicate melodies and introspective lyrics. Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate 2009 Gold Series Fumé Blanc Niagara Peninsula $23.95 (988332) presents a similarly bright and rich character.
UK electro outfit Seefeel made its name for itself in the 1990s with trancelike electronic tracks that some labelled dream pop. The band’s unexpected return offers another blast of hazy, experimental tunes, which would be an ideal soundtrack of hip coffee shops or wine bars. It’s a fine match for Sokol Blosser Winery Evolution White Wine United States, $19.95 (206870), an enjoyably aromatic, multi-region blend of nine grape varieties.

Despite being overlooked by Oscar voters, wine deserves the best supporting actor award for the role it plays in the edgy family drama, The Kids Are All Right. The Annette Bening and Julianne Moore vehicle sees characters enjoying wines from California vintners Fiddlehead Cellars, Seavey Vineyards and Kalyra Winery. Keep in the spirit, by opening a bottle of Mirassou 2009 Pinot Noir, California $12.95 (185249)
.Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir Eat, Pray, Love not only inspired a cottage industry of products ranging from perfume to a special edition Italian Pinot Grigio, its New Age Harlequin Romance story arc provided a plum role for Oscar winner Julia Roberts who gets to savour the sights of Italy, India and Bali. Sip along with a glass of Rocca delle Macìe 2008 Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy $19.95 (741769)
