This year marks the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby at the Churchill Downs racetrack, where the Mint Julep has been the official drink for the last 25 years. But you needn’t be down south, placing bets, or even taken by horse racing to enjoy these Bourbon cocktails. Create a little of your own southern comfort with these mouth-watering beverages. We bet you’ll love them all.

Maker’s Mark Mint Julep

Ingredients
1 ½ parts Maker’s Mark Bourbon
Fresh mint
2 TBsp simple syrup* muddled with mint
Splash of distilled water
Powdered sugar

Method
Mix together simple syrup muddled with mint, Maker’s Mark Bourbon and distilled water. Fill glass with crushed ice and pour mixture over top. Sprinkle top of ice with powdered sugar. Garnish with a mint sprig.

*Simple syrup
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup distilled water
Heat to dissolve sugar, stirring constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.

 

Gail Simmons’ Lemon Ginger “Tulep”

Ingredients

3 TBsp ginger simple syrup*
6-8 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish 
Ice 
1 cup Lemon Pure Leaf Iced Tea
Cold club soda 
Candied ginger, for garnish

Method

In an old fashioned glass, muddle ginger simple syrup with mint leaves. Add ice and Lemon Pure Leaf Iced Tea and stir well. Top with a splash of club soda and garnish with a slice of candied ginger and a sprig of mint.

To make a cocktail: Add 1.5 oz overproof Kentucky bourbon before adding the tea.

*Ginger simple syrup
Makes 1 ½ cups
½ cup fresh ginger, thinly sliced 
½ cup granulated sugar 
1 ½ cups water
In a saucepan, combine the ginger, sugar and water and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove the pan from the heat and then set aside to cool. Strain the syrup and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to one week.

 

Grand Derby

Instructions

1 part Maker’s Mark Bourbon
½ part orange liqueur 
½ part fresh lemon juice
½ part fresh orange juice

Method

Shake and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

 

Kentucky Bubbly

Instructions

1 part Maker’s Mark Bourbon
Chilled Martinelli’s sparkling apple cider
Maraschino cherry

Method

Add Maker’s Mark Bourbon to a champagne flute, then fill with chilled sparkling apple cider. Add a maraschino cherry.
