With Synthetica (Mom + Pop), Toronto's Metric is poised to join Feist and Arcade Fire as Canada's greatest musical exports. Smart songwriting and a desire to push creative boundaries serve the band well across 11 shapeshifting tracks. Metric's marriage of sunny pop and harder-edge sounds is as balanced as CedarCreek Estate Winery 2011 Gewürztraminer Okanagan Valley $18 (240978)
Fiona Apple's new release raised plenty of eyebrows with its title, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (Epic). But it's as good an indication as any of the album's intimate, challenging and thrilling collection of songs. Enjoy with the equally thrilling St. Nicolas Brut Crackling Strong Cider Quebec $16.95 (277442)
Another album title that sets the stage nicely, Celebration Rock (Polyvinyl) is a great introduction to Japandroids' joyous, garage rock. It's fun to see just how loud this Vancouver duo can be as they blaze through eight songs in 35 minutes, while keeping things pure and interesting. The same intensity and thrill elevates the enjoyable Liberty School 2009 Zinfandel California $18.95 (041095)

A chance encounter gives new meaning to Gérard Depardieu's character Germain's life. The low-key French comedy, My Afternoons with Margueritte tells the tale of an unconventional friendship between an illiterate gardener and intellectual senior citizen. Nothing really happens, but it serves as a great escape to a small French town. Louis Bernard 2010 Côtes du Rhône Blanc Rhône Valley, France $12.45 (589432) offers the same charm.

David Gelb's documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the only way most will ever experience Jiro Ono's celebrated restaurant Sukiyabashi. Located in a Tokyo subway station, the 10-seat establishment has been awarded a Michelin three-star review and is the destination for sushi lovers from around the world. Enjoy with the attractive and refreshing Wynns Coonawarra Estate 2010 Riesling Coonawarra, Australia $17.95 (528216)
